Stainless Steel tubing and Carbon integrated together to produce lightweight, high-strength bicycle tubing
KVA Stainless is working with a company that has invented a new patented carbon technology. Together we are developing new hybrid bicycle tubes that incorporate the carbon technology and (MS2 patented technology) for road bikes and mountain bikes, thus, resulting in lighter and stronger bicycle tubes.
Having MS2 Stainless Steel and Carbon, combines the best attributes of advanced composites with those of stainless steel. We start with MS2 stainless steel tubing and then design and engineer a precise pattern to be laser machined to remove the optimal amount of material from the tube.
The resulting lightweight metal shell is then fused (using the company’s patented Bi/Fusion Technology) with an advanced composite inner structure molded during a secondary process using elevated temperature and pressure. Because of the characteristics of the different materials, multi-material tube structure are lighter than the original stainless steel tube and have improved bending/torsion performance.
This multi-material tubing possess unique vibration damping qualities due to the dissimilar natural frequencies of the fiber based composites and stainless steel. This vibration damping effect gives improved “feel” to bicycle frames and components when compared to the vibrations generated by single material metal surfaces.
We are in the process of building several frames with this new carbon/stainless steel technology and look forward to testing in the laboratory and within real world environments. Look for more news in the very near future as we begin our testing.
Cheers~
